In 2006, the Hickman County Public Library entered into a partnership with Clay Harris, local playwright and director, to produce and present a play based on old obituaries from newspapers. The play, aptly called Obituary, premiered in Centerville in September, 2006 where it played to two sold out crowds. The reception of the play was such that Harris and the cast decided to take it to the Tennessee Performing Arts Center in Nashville, where their audience almost filled the Polk Theatre in April, 2007. Since then, the Clay Harris Theater has presented six original plays in Centerville, under the auspices of the Hickman County Public Library. Grants from the Tennessee Arts Commission have also helped produce three historical productions and childrens’ theatre projects, all written and directed by Clay Harris. An encore performance of Obituary was performed April 5, 2008, at the East Hickman High School in Lyles, Tennessee.
